We conducted fieldwork in San Juan del Oro, Peru (SATREPS).
In late May 2026, as part of a field survey for the JST-JICA SATREPS project "Development of an Integrated Forest Management System Model for Mountain Forest Ecosystem Conservation in the Andes-Amazon" (CEFORAA project), I visited the San Juan del Oro district in Puno Province, Peru. Together with researchers from the La Molina Agricultural University (UNALM), my counterpart, we conducted surveys on forest cover and land use, as well as interviews about the involvement of women in coffee production, the region's main industry.
Over the two days, starting with coordination at the city hall, I spoke with people from diverse backgrounds, including coffee producers and cooperative officials from various sectors, and representatives from DEVIDA (National Committee for the Control and Development of Narcotics). I gained many insights, such as the significant decline in coffee yields due to climate change and disease, the gradual increase in women's participation through cooperatives and certification systems, the remaining challenges, and the deep connection between land ownership and women's economic independence.
The project is nearing completion. We will proceed with analyzing the data obtained and plan to hold a report meeting around this fall to share the research findings with the local community.
