Kyushu University Agricultural Research Facility Hands-on Learning Program Held for High School Students
Friday, March 7, 2025Tropical Agriculture Research CenterThe event was held as part of a high school-university collaboration project, and 17 students and 3 teachers from Fukuoka Prefectural Itoshima Agricultural High School (hereafter referred to as Itoshima Agricultural High School) participated.Center for Experimental Biological Environment ControlThe students attended lectures and seminars given by faculty members, as well as tours of the facilities.
Itoshima Agricultural High School is one of three agricultural high schools in Fukuoka Prefecture. Located in the agriculturally-rich Itoshima area, it specializes in agriculture and produces many talented people who will lead the region's future agriculture, livestock and food industries.
In the morning, I and the Tropical Agriculture Research CenterAssociate Professor Norimitsu Hamaokagave a lecture and seminar. The lecture introduced "Education, Research, and International Cooperation at the Tropical Agriculture Research Center," followed by a workshop-style seminar on "The Lives of People in Tropical Rural Areas." Associate Professor Hamaoka's lecture covered "A research vision for international co-creation of tropical agriculture," introducing topics ranging from familiar farmland to issues in tropical agriculture and international collaborative research. The students proactively offered their opinions, making it a meaningful experience in which they were exposed to different ways of thinking and values than their own. After the lecture, the students toured the Tropical Agriculture Research Center's laboratories, and many students were surprised by their sheer size.


In the afternoon, Associate Professor Hamaoka gave a tour of the Ito Botanical Gardens, followed by a presentation by co-sponsorCenter for Experimental Biological Environment Control OfProfessor Satoshi YoshidaLectures and exercises were held.
