The 12th Waseda University W-BRIDGE Project, a joint project between the Tropical Agriculture Research Center, Kyushu University and the international environmental NGO Friends of the Earth Japan, entitled "Promoting supply chain management and sustainable raw material procurement that contributes to zero deforestation," published the "Timber Due Diligence Guidance" (first edition) on December 2019, 12.
This guidance was created to serve as a reference for companies on what standards they should use for due diligence (DD) in response to the Clean Wood Act, which came into force in May 2017. In particular, it provides a detailed explanation of the concept of "risk" in risk assessment, which is the most important process in DD, and is expected to help companies implement DD that can eliminate illegally logged timber and, by extension, unsustainable timber from their supply chains by providing a proper understanding of DD.
The main target audience of this guidance is the first-class wood-related businesses that first bring wood and wood products into the Japanese market. However, it is also desirable for second-class wood-related businesses that purchase wood and wood products from first-class wood-related businesses to have a detailed understanding of the content of the DD conducted by the first-class wood-related businesses and to obtain the necessary information appropriately and reliably in order to properly communicate and disclose information to end consumers. This is a must-read document for second-class businesses as well. Furthermore, since the Clean Wood Act imposes an obligation on all businesses that handle wood to make an effort to trade legal wood, the information included is intended for all businesses, including retailers.

This guidance was developed with the aim of supporting companies in implementing due diligence (DD) so that they can eliminate illegally harvested timber and, by extension, unsustainable timber from their supply chains by providing them with a proper understanding of DD. In particular, it compiles information that is considered to be useful for companies implementing DD on what standards they should base their DD activities on.

The "Wood Due Diligence Handbook" was published in January 10 by the 2018th Waseda University W-BRIDGE Project, a joint project between the Tropical Agriculture Research Center, Kyushu University, and the international environmental NGO Friends of the Earth Japan, entitled "Raising Awareness of Fair Wood Procurement to Improve the Effectiveness of the Clean Wood Act."
This is a handbook for due diligence measures aimed at the wood-handling industry. It provides an easy-to-understand explanation of "due diligence" regarding wood procurement. Please use it as a resource for wood-related businesses who are considering implementing due diligence in the future.
